Discovery Call Questions for Marketing Agencies
A strong discovery call is not a checklist interrogation. It is a structured conversation that helps both sides understand whether there is a real problem, a credible fit, a buying path, and a sensible next step.
40 discovery call questions organized by purpose
Do not ask all 40. Pick the questions that help you understand the actual situation and follow the prospect’s answers naturally.
Why now?
How is it handled today?
What needs to improve?
Why does the problem matter?
How does work move today?
Does the investment make sense?
Who decides?
Can this actually move?
A useful discovery call flow
The order should feel conversational, but these stages keep the call from drifting into an unstructured pitch.
Context
Understand why the conversation exists.
Current state
Learn how the problem is handled today.
Gap & impact
Clarify what is not working and why it matters.
Fit & buying path
Map economics, stakeholders, timing, and risk.
Next step
Agree what should happen—or not happen—next.
Listen for evidence, not just positive language
Signals of a real opportunity
- A specific problem or goal is described
- The prospect can explain why it matters now
- There is a plausible owner and decision process
- The economics can support the service
- A clear next action can be agreed
Signals to slow down
- The call is only general curiosity
- No one owns the problem internally
- There is no meaningful business impact
- The prospect expects guarantees you cannot responsibly make
- There is no route to a decision or future trigger
How to end the discovery call
Summarize before recommending
“Let me make sure I’ve got this right. You’re trying to [goal], the main constraint is [problem], and [stakeholders/timing] are the key conditions. Based on that, I think the next sensible step is [proposal / audit / stakeholder session / no next step]. Does that match how you see it?”
This makes the next step a consequence of what the prospect said rather than a preset pitch.
